(Denver, CO, 7 November 2007) -
Speaking before the 20th NREL Industry Growth Forum in Denver,
Colorado, Mr. Bruce W. Ferguson, Chairman, President and Chief
Executive Officer of Edenspace Systems Corporation, today announced the
closing of a $10 million financing package to support development of
the company's innovative Energy Corntm and other enhanced crops for
production of low-cost cellulosic ethanol. The funding includes
proceeds from the sale of Series A Preferred Stock, state and local
financial incentives, and financing for a new energy-efficient,
state-of-the art plant biotechnology facility at the company's planned
headquarters in Junction City, Kansas that will support Edenspace's
rapidly-growing development team. The Series A round was led by
the Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation.
Edenspace seeks to introduce improved crop feedstocks to reduce the
downstream processing costs of cellulosic ethanol. With funding
from a 2006 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy ("DOE") under the
Biomass Research and Development Initiative, the company leads an
Energy Corntm Consortium that is developing new varieties of corn
optimized for production of renewable fuels. The Consortium's
development program integrates three core elements: (i) identification
and testing of superior enzymes; (ii) rapid development of corn
feedstocks bred specifically for ethanol production from corn leaves
and stems (stover), and (iii) the ability to use existing facilities
and equipment at current starch ethanol production plants.
Successful completion of the project is expected to reduce today's high
capital equipment, materials, energy, and disposal costs for cellulosic
ethanol, as well as increase ethanol yields per acre, reduce CO2
emissions and pollution from fossil fuels, increase energy
independence, and raise rural and farm incomes. The company has
augmented its development efforts through development agreements with
key partners at DOE's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (Golden,
CO), Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI), Oklahoma State
University (Stillwater, OK), ICM, Inc. (Colwich, KS) and the U.S.
Department of Agriculture's Western Regional Research Laboratory
(Albany, CA).
Headquartered in Dulles, Virginia, Edenspace Systems Corporation is a
commercial leader in the use of plants for renewable fuels and
environmental applications. The company received the Environmental
Business Journal's Technology Award in 2004 and the DaimlerChrysler
Environmental Excellence award in 1999. With expertise in plant
science, environmental and soil science, genetics and agronomy,
Edenspace is developing innovative, sustainable technologies to fulfill
energy needs, improve human health, protect property values and restore
the environment.
