EDENSPACE RECEIVES USDA FUNDING FOR BIOFUELS-OPTIMIZED SWITCHGRASS
Non-Food Perennial Crop to Incorporate Endoplant Enzymes for Low-Cost Production of Cellulosic Ethanol and Other Biofuels

(June 19, 2008) The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded Edenspace follow-on funding to continue development of enhanced switchgrass varieties for producing lower-cost biofuels such as cellulosic ethanol from non-food plant leaves and stems. The plants will contain "endoplant enzymes" useful in reducing energy inputs and waste outputs of biofuels production.

Improved Crops for Cellulosic Biofuels
Bioengineering plants with increased biomass and stored enzymes can dramatically reduce the costs of producing renewable fuels from non-food parts such as leaves, stems and cobs. Edenspace's first energy crop, Energy Corn™, will double the amount of cellulosic ethanol that can be made from the current corn crop without increasing farm acreage. Edenspace is also developing other energy-optimized crops that include switchgrass, sorghum and sugar cane.
